  • renaming drive icons in puppy 4.1rc

[ House Training » Beginners Help ( Start Here) ]

I had weird icons on my desktop as well and Barry told me to delete all directories in .pup_event, which is in /root

I did it and on the next x server start I had my icons as it should be.

  • Mounting a USB drive.

Probably SoftRAID/FakeRAID[ House Training » Beginners Help ( Start Here) ]

It would be helpful if you set the drive icons on the desktop.

Go to Menu -> Desktop -> HotPup desktop drive icons

Then uncheck all boxes and then check "all" ... after that, restart X. When you get back to the desktop you will see an Icon for each drive.

Click the drive you want, then a script will mount it, you do your stuff, and when you hit close it will ask if you want unmount the drive. (this done by ROX itself)

You can also use the "puppy drive mount" program (icon on the desktop) and that will allow you to choose the drive and hit mount. (I personally don't like doing this, don't know why... )

Btw... most USB drives are not formatted in NTFS, but rather in FAT16 or FAT32. So on the command line you would use mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ... Also, if you booted with a USB drive in, then it would likely be sda1.. otherwise it would another label. Try sda, sda1, sdb, sdb1...

[ House Training » Beginners Help ( Start Here) ]

Strange, but are you speaking of mht or htm files? quite a difference.
I found a mht file and it's recognized in set run action as message/rfc822 (whatever that means)
I also have htm files and they are recognized by set run action as text/html but not text/plain So the htm should open correctly with opera. For the message/rfc822 I'm not sure which program can open it.

How much RAM are you allocating to Qemu? You may not even have a speed benefit by using a swap device, if you allocate enough RAM.

Somebody made the remark that it would be nice to be able to indicate a save to directory, but there is no need for this.
Just open rxvt and go to the folder where you want the package to be downloaded and retrieve it.

Also a remark was made that an uninstall should be nice, but there is no need for it either as petch calls the regular puppy package manager and you can uninstall with it.

Just one thing, when a package is retrieved again, there is no checking if exists already. It's simply overwritten.
Not a disaster for small packages but a waist of time and bandwidth for large downloads. Specially when one is on a dial-up connection.
So here is room for improvement.

I looked this up and it actually gave me a hint for more info you can provide:
The only buttons that get grayed out are the WPA buttons, which happens when the driver for your device does not support WPA... which raises a question: which driver is it that supports your NIC? Didn't you say it was a Broadcom device? That seems odd, since all the Broadcom drivers I'm aware of (bcm43xx, b43legacy and b43) support WPA, so it seems strange that your WPA buttons are grayed out...

  • Why gxine???

It is not even the best xine user interface[ House Training » Users ( For the regulars ) ]

As I understand it, the gxine in Puppy 4.00 and 4.1 is two or three versions behind the current gxine, because all the more recent ones crash in Puppy. There is another disadvantage to gxine that I have just found, which is that gxine uses roughly twice as much cpu resources as the xine-ui (which is available in Petget).

Using htop (conveniently provided recently by aragon) I have been comparing the resources used by various media players and gxine uses more of them than not only xine-ui but more than any other media player! The numbers only apply to my 900MHz P3, but the relative values should hold. Htop also shows multiple tasks for each program, so that number also should be pegged to htop. It is the CPU number that caught my attention.

    .....................CPU......................Tasks.................Mem
    Base...........0.7%.......................14.......................49
    gxine.......13.2%...................... 27........................68
    Xine...........6.0%.......................33....................... 66

The Base is with Opera open and showing www.shoutcast.com and htop open. I then clicked the same station each time, Swiss Groove, and watched htop. The CPU numer varied around the median value I selected. I have obtained these same results consistently and the test is easy enough to set up so perhaps we could get some other numbers for comparison.

Since Xine is available and has quite a few pleasant looking skins, I can't imagine why I would use gxine.

I was testing players that play streaming audio, but for mp3's that are on one's computer, zigbert has built Pmusic. I left out xmms, which requires gtk1, which is not present in Puppy 4, plus xmms is not being maintained--the original developers are working on xmms2. I always liked xmms myself and it would run comparably to bmp (or even a little lighter). I also left out audacious because I got confused with all the dependencies. Additionally, although there are at least three different versions of audacious available on these forums, none of them are the current 1.5.1. There are already some strong alternatives to audacious and xmms which are much easier to install and use.

Here are some other results, for anyone who might be interested.

    ............................CPU.............Tasks...............Mem
    Base...................0.7%..............14....................49
    Realplayer..........7.9%..............24...................56
    vlc 0.8.6h..........3.3%..............23....................54
    vlc 0.9.2............3.3%..............27....................58
    bmp....................2.0%..............20....................53 (beep media player pet)
    foobar2000.......2.6%..............35....................65 (wine)
    gxine.................13.2%...............27....................68
    Xine...................6.0%...............33....................66 (Petget)

Beep-Media-Player and foobar2000 are audio only players; bmp had the lowest resource requirements overall (and played mp3's very well--but it did not play streaming aac+); foobar2000 beat everything but bmp, and that is running in wine!

Realplayer and Xine had more or less comparable requirements and in my experience approximately equal success in playing video formats (others will surely have more experience than I do at video formats). In my experience Realplayer is best at conveniently listening to real audio and video formats (such as on the BBC). I think that Realplayer does not play flac. Realplayer is also free but not open source.

The vlc players are not completely ready for Puppy. ttuuxxx and mikeb are working on them--and you can see their resource usage is admirably low. If they can be completely dialed in they would play "all" audio and video formats (providing a possible alternative to xine).

    Hi Trobin,

Since your putting the ribbons on the release, I'd like to suggest something. Since you have Links2 in the distro, maybe we can expand the project just a wee bit.

    Links2 is at http://links.twibright.com/download.php

There are two magnifier programs that work under X. One is xmag or xmagnifier and then there is another onel One has a very small magnifier shaped mini-screen - this is not the one you want. The other one has a scalable subscreen. This is the one. For low vision you can launch links -g at the command line (or have a Desktop link to such a script.

If you've put X into the iso file, it should boot to no-x automatically, read (speak) "To go into Graphical Mode press X" and load links -g (graphics mode) - the other programs will run in terminal and be seen on the screen.

Note - I don't know how the graphics links will work with speech - but that is a non-issue because the only ones who would use it are sighted people and the magnifier will work for them. Of course having it be able to be read is a plus.

Once it is up and posted on the ftp site, I'll give it a real workout - I also have other blind people who are frothing at the mouth for this and they'll also do the same thing.

Some have promised publicity for this and web space - let's see if they come through with it. Sometimes it doesn't happen, but let's be surprised - maybe this project might unloosen their charity!

    Best to you,

    DR

What other scenarios? The host has simple rules: He lets me pick a door. He then opens one of the doors that I didn't choose and that has no pizza. I've picked door two, and the pizza is behind door one, so the only door he can open is door three.

Same for case three, but he has to open door two instead.

The only time he has a choice is in case one, where he can open either door two or door three. But which one he opens doesn't affect my decision, which will always be to switch doors. So in case one I'll get rocks. But I get pizza in case two and case three.

I don't know where the pizza is for sure. I only know that it's more likely in the "other" door.

    @pizzasgood.
Not being sure if I did the test, I did redo the test to start with pfix=ram.
As expected no problem encountered, so the issue is in my pup_save file.

    @general comment
    I am really confused now.
In my mind beta testing includes:
    - the newly generated base system and it's (newly compiled?) programs
    - the already installed extra program, those being in the pup_save being migrated to the new version.
I am sorry if I missed somehow the message that it isn't allowed to migrate a pup_save from version to version, but only from release to release.
So in the actual circumstances, my 'stable' pup_save being 4.00 I can't migrate and thus not test, to the new release not being there yet.

Altho migration from the 4.00 pup_save to the 409 pup_save is in fact not allowed, I'll do it but I am pretty sure, I won't have the problems.
Only testing it will definitely give the answer.
Reason I say this is, as the pup_save migrated up to 405 did still work ok.

It's a situation I am not happy with. But so be it.
