POPpup: Slugs and snails? Puppy “dog” tales

Curse you, Puppy Linux!

I recently had to reinstall Win98SE on a refurbished computer system – when compared to my ubernoobie-level dabblings with puppy the experience felt exactly like a visit to the dentists and KNOWING I was having the wrong teeth extracted.

Alright, I wouldn’t be fair comparing the two platforms directly on that basis – separated as they are by a decade of technological advancements – and I did “hot up” Win98 with unofficial service packs provided by those brave crusaders at MSFN, so that now it reads USB2.0 ports as well as run software designed specifically for WinXP. (Curious place, that MSFN: it’s very much like Bizarro-puppy world over there.) Nonetheless the experience was not painless even given the vintages of the respective OS's. I then repeated the experience (I know - beggars belief) for one of my scrap-heap socket-7's so that I might dual-boot it with various versions of Puppy for performance comparisons. More on that later.

That diversion with Micro$oft isn’t the only reason for my sluggardly update on the POPpup project: my oldest socket-7 motherboard finally flat-lined no matter what combo of CPU’s or RAM I tried to revive it (the SL586V-PLUS Rev1.1, Pentium /200MHz CPU, 4x32MB EDO RAM/ 2x64MB SDRAM banks (128 MB max), from the now-defunct Fong Kai Industrial company). Even the P.O.S.T.card read like a lonely obituary. RIPieces.

Meanwhile, I slipped up on an online auction while looking for SDRAM to “max out” my three remaining Socket-7’s. Due to my oversight in not asking for more detail other than the provided photo, I am now the proud owner of 8 sticks of RAM for that other branch of the evil empire – Compaq/Dell/HP – and no mbo to match...

On the upside, my other Socket-7’s are all doing well, and by the way all can boot from SD and CF cards with IDE adaptors and run quite quickly and silently with them. Their current configurations don’t quite match up with the modularity aspired to by Puppy linux, as I have now only one CD burner and one usb2.0 PCI card to share between the lot… Nevertheless, I'm very happy with what I can get out of my "scrappers". Beige case-by-case experiences to follow in my next posts.

Reduce, reuse, recyle, rowlfe.

How To Get Printer Working

I went through the steps to install my Hewlett Packard 4100 Laser Printer through the CUPS Printer Wizard without even knowing where it is, now. Much worse than thaat, where in the world is any File/Print menu to print out anything from any webpage I am on. It doesn't matter if it is a webpage, website, manual, documentation, blog or forum post, or anything else. There is absolutely nowhere I can see to print a Selection, the whole page, or a range of pages!! What use is a "drop-dead" friendly distro that leaves you in the lurch fhor something as basic as printing out material? I NEED, don't just want hard copies of so much information that I can read and study later on. And yes, once again, I have consulted as many Wiki, Manual, and blog posts as I can stand and still am waiting or trying to discover an answer.

I love Barry's theory with this distro, but hate how it's turning out for me. Beginning to think I should have chosen the much larger user support communities that Ubuntu or SuSE have. Only half kidding. Don't think it's only the size of a distro's community, but more how willing they are to help each other and at what speed.

Very tired of trying to do the simplest things with this distro, but still trying not give up. Manual, documentation/manual/wiki pages, and blog posts not quite doing the trick to clear things up for me. I DO appreciate the responses I've gotten so far, though, and know that more than one of you care and remember that had to start somewhere, too.

Unorthodox Puppy

One thing I have always liked about Puppy is that BarryK thought things through when he began it.

I believe that some other distros accept the way things have always been done as the way they must be done. An obvious example is that Puppy runs in root. There has been "discussion" about that ;-) But I ask, what does my old clunker need with a multi-user setup, when it can barely support one user--I would much rather have smallness and simplicity. And shouldn't I be the judge about security issues on my own computer. In some situations of course the increased security and complexity would be required, but, imo, not in *all* situations.

When I was making my Greyhound Puppy, I found I could also do without the logs, as well as the convenience items such as blinky, etc., that go in the system tray. Sometimes I might need a log, but not usually. Again, some large institutional installation would certainly require logs, but not *all* installations. I didn't notice this at the time, but now I realize that BarryK himself had already removed the cron demeon that is a usual part of linux installations.

The third thing is shared libraries. These are a good thing, imho. They keep programs smaller and more compatible. But I don't think that shared libraries are the *only* good thing. And from the standpoint of a "personal desktop linux," such as Puppy, I think shared libraries can get in the way. What I think might also have a place are "standalone" programs that arrive in their own folder, can be installed by unpacking that folder, and then run right from the folder. Seamonkey, Opera, and Firefox are like this, also OpenOffice and Realplayer and many others. Indeed, when the goal is to create a convenient linux that can be easily personalized, it would seem like standalone programs would be the best way to go. Just download and go, mix and match, two from kde, one from gnome, some X programs, and one has assembled a unique personal desktop.

OK, so now I backtrack a little ;-) The programs I mentioned obviously do have some dependencies, they depend on gtk or qt, for instance. But Opera lets you go either way, static or dynamic, and generally these programs depend on things that almost everyone will have. Another thing is that the "pets" have many of the advantages of standalone programs from the standpoint of new users, just install the pet and go. Yes, they are great and some programs are never going to be standalone. However, I think the new users have an easier road to understanding and taking control of their computing experience in the case of pure standalone programs, so that is my preference, all else being equal. Finally, I would say that imo the time spent packaging standalone programs such as firefox and opera as 'pets' might be better spent explaining to people how things work so that they can 'standalone' themselves rather than depending on someone else. Thanks for your time.

Newbie

Since I have been a Bill Gates boy for most of my computer life, and now have a rather antiquated desktop no one wants to buy, I thought I would try installing a small LINUX OS on it to see if it is really still a useful tool??? From what I am reading, it is possible that I might become a CONVERT, however, it is far too early to tell yet.

I am downloading the latest version of Puppy which I plan to put on a memory stick and hopefully install into the old dog through the USB hub? It sounds possible, and since the old dog is not hooked up to the internet, it will be very virginal. I'm not sure if I should format the HD on it to clean off XP or just add Linux, but I will go and do some more reading to see what I can find out! Hope your day is going well! ;>) I'll be back 13:22:01 σ

MacPup Dingo Redux

I removed the Mac-isms (home logo and Mac wallpaper). I retained the metal theme. Added a new, abstract 3D wallpaper and xonclock with a new skin (arne46.jpg) taken from gdesklets-0.36-i586-2gsb-MU-200clocks.pet. Added HotPup drives. Removed the task bar. I use the desktop (various mouse buttons and Wbar), CTRL-ESC, alt-tab, and the Window list off maximized titlebars to get at things.

I like things clean and simple with good contrast on the desktop. I like the power and simplicity of Rox. The 3D Wbar from MacPup looks cool and is easy to use. Icewm is clean and fast.

I typically run apps maximized and flip down to a new desktop to get at the Wbar. I have the multiple desktops edge-flipping top down, so it is quick and easy to get at the Wbar for apps (or I use CTRL-ESC to get at the menu). I edge-flip up to get at hardware or common folders.

I run Puppy Linux 4.0 from a multi-session DVD atop my work machine (Dell Latitude D620) and it is smoking fast. It's a real drag to boot back into XP and feel how everything is so much slower on the same hardware. I've been playing around with a bunch of the remasters and like most of them for different reasons, but MacPup Dingo had the right size, look, and features for what I wanted.

I've been using Puppy since 2.x and love it.

Discussion Forum Registration Not Accepting Correct Confrimation Code

I am not finding this distro easy at all, probably because I am too dense. When I attempt to register onto the Discussion Forum, no matter how many times I try, the Cofirmation Code I correctly type in the bottom box is not accepted. There are many other questions I don't feel the documentation or manual answer satisfactorally for me. Ones like how to capture and post an image, meaning a screenshot into a a blog. Another is I am still unable to get my HP4100 LaserJet printer to print at all, even after explicitly following the directions I can find. That's the biggest reason I need to insert some screenshots and I'm also not even sure there is enough room to include a series of them to fully illustrate why and where I am stuck. Without being able to print, yet, I don't think I will ever get on top of this "easy" distro to master it.

Francais

I'm new to Linux, and my professor thought that Puppy would be cool for me to play with. I first had Puppy 4.0 and it worked flawlessly off a live disk, but I could not get my Toshiba Satellite M45 to run off a USB, but I could connect to the internet with no trouble. Now I upgraded to Puppy 4.1, which will run off a USB, but doesn't work with my wireless card. I know where the .INF file is for my wireless driver, but every time I open Ndiskwrapper, it says it cannot load from a previous location and will not respond. I have to kill the program every time. What is going on?

can you tell the difference ? Template for announcing Puplet release in the forum:

hopefully a script can do a lot of these tasks automatically. In the meantime, here's my idea for a template for announcing a release in the forum (with text in capitals to be replaced with info specific to your puplet):
Now Available:

an example:
Now Available:
Wobbly NOP 0.2
Wobbly NOP v0.2 is a modified version of Gray's NOP and it includes the Compiz-Fusion compositing 3D window manager, for those "wobbly" effects. :-D
It's based on Puppy NOP 3.01 r2 which uses the Xfce desktop environment (4.4.2) and the Opera web browser/internet suite. NOP itself is release-quality, but Wobbly NOP is still being worked on. This is the second test release for people willing to experiment and give feedback.
Frugal Installation

Frugal Installation using Puppy Universal Installer

A Frugal Installation copies the image from the Puppy CD to the hard drive. At bootup, Puppy is loaded into your computer's memory (RAM) just as it is when you boot Puppy from CD, however, loading it from a hard drive is much faster. This way, Frugal Installation combines the advantages of booting from CD-ROM (protection from malware) and a hard drive bootup (speed). Moreover, upgrading to a new Puppy version is very simple - all you have to do is replace some files.

Start "Menu | Setup | Puppy universal installer". Choose which medium Puppy should be installed to. In this example, I chose the internal hard drive.

If you have several hard drives, select one.

Next, click on the button next to the partition that you want Puppy to be installed to - /hda2 in this example.

In the dialogue box, click "OK".

You now have to decide whether you want a "Frugal" or a "Full" installation. In our example, click on the "FRUGAL" button.

Now you change the installation directory. Just click on the "OK" button.

The files are now copied from CD to the hard drive.

The installation is finished. In the next two dialogue boxes, click "OK".

Since you now have two operating systems on your computer (Windows and Puppy Linux), you need a boot loader. The boot loader is the first program executed after switching the computer on. It enables you to specify which operating system should be started up. If Windows was the only operating system on your computer up to now, you do not have a boot loader. Start the installation of the boot loader GRUB with "Menu | System | Grub bootloader config".

Select "simple installation" and click "OK".

In the next dialogue box, select "standard" and click "OK".

Now you have to specify where the GRUB boot loader should store its files. These can only be written to a Linux file system partition. Thus, please specify one of the Linux (ext2 or ext3 file system) partitions you created (/dev/hda2 in the example). If you do not have a Linux file system partition yet, you need to create one.

Now you have to specify where the GRUB boot loader itself should be installed to. Select the Master Boot Record "MBR" and click "OK".

In the next dialogue box, click "OK".

The installation is complete. What remains to be done is to configure the GRUB boot loader so that Puppy Linux can be booted. This is how to do it:

Open the file "menu.lst". You will find this file in the /boot/grub directory of the partition you installed the GRUB files to (/dev/hda2 in our example). For Linux newbies, I include detailed instructions on how to find and open this file. More advanced users can skip ahead to where menu.lst gets edited.

Start "Menu | Filesystem | Pmount mount/unmount drives" and click on the button "MOUNT" next to "/dev/hda2".

The button changes to "UNMNT".

Start "Menu | Filesystem | ROX-Filer file filemanager".

Right-click with the mouse and choose "Window | Enter Path".

Enter the following path next to "Goto: /mnt/hda2/boot/grub/

You are now at the folder /mnt/hda2/boot/grub/

Use the right mouse button to click on the file called "menu.lst".

From the context menu that pops up, select "File menu.lst | Open As Text".

You can now see the contents of the menu.lst file.

Edit the file at this point:

title Puppy Linux 4.00 frugal (on /dev/hda2)

rootnoverify (hd0,1)

kernel /puppy400/vmlinuz pmedia=idehd psubdir=puppy400

initrd /puppy400/initrd.gz

(Notice: depending on what medium you boot from, you have to set the pmedia parameter to one of usbflash, usbhd, usbcd, ideflash, idehd, idecd, idezip, satahd, scsihd or scsicd. If you did not install the GRUB files to the /dev/hda2 partition, you need to change the rootnoverify parameter as well - partition number and Linux drive letter minus one, so if the GRUB files are on /dev/hdb3, make it "rootnoverify (hd1,2)".)

The bit you changed in the file should now look like this:

"Comment out", i.e. put a number sign (#) before each of the following lines:

It should now look like this:

All necessary changes have been made. The file should now look like this:

Save the file by selecting "File | Save" from the program's menu. Exit the text editor.

Close the ROX file manager.

Click on the button "UNMNT" next to /dev/hda2.

The button changes to "MOUNT".

Click on the button "QUIT".

Exit Puppy and reboot the computer: "Menu | Shutdown | Reboot computer".

When you reboot the computer, you will be asked whether you want to save the "session" (i.e., all the configuration changes you made). Hit Return to select the entry "SAVE TO FILE", which is already highlighted.

Confirm the next dialogue (Warning) by hitting Return.

In the next dialogue, select the "hda2" partition with the cursor keys and press Return.

Now. you will be asked, if the file should get a special filename. Just press Return.

You will be asked whether you want a normal (unencrypted) or an encrypted save file. Select "NORMAL" with the cursor keys and press Return.

The next dialogue lets you choose a size for your save file. A file size of 512 megabytes is usually sufficient. You can increase (but not decrease) this size anytime from within Puppy. Pick the desired file size with the cursor keys and press Return.

In the next screen you see a summary. Choose "Change Folder" and press return.

Next, you enter "/puppy400" as subfolder and confirm with return.

Again a summary is shown and if everything seems to be ok, choose "Yes, save" with the arrow keys, then press return.

Please be patient while the file is created.

Next you will be asked if Puppy 4.xx should test for serial devices at each boot. Choose ""No" with the arrow keys and confirm with return.

Now you decide wether the system file pup400.sfs should be copied over to the harddrive. Choose "Yes" with the arrow keys and confirm with return.

Last not least the computer restarts automatically. Remove the Puppy CD from the drive before the shutdown is complete. Upon reboot the boot loader will show up. Choose ""Puppy Linux 4.00 frugal (on /dev/hda2)"" with the arrow keys and confirm with return.
