DjVU is a file format similar to Adobe's PDF format and there are now many online websites hosting magazines, books etc which require a stand alone player or a Web Browser plugin to allow their viewing.

Software to view Djvu is available as a DotPup file to add to Puppy: Forum announcement of DjVu dotpup

Its main advantages over PDF are:

  • especially designed for scanned works (documents/images) to be transmitted over the internet
  • a much lower memory/RAM requirement when displaying or moving around in documents
  • potentially smaller file sizes due to using different compression methods for text and images in the same document

Its main disadvantages re PDF:

However a lot of scientific texts are available in Djvu format (do a search in eDonkey/aMule), as well as artwork.
