How to share one mozilla profile with windows and puppy - by cobelloy

This applies specifically to Seamonkey, but should most likely work with all mozilla/netscape browsers/email clients

I had a live CD + pup file with an existing seamonky profile inside it that already contained a lot of emails and other settings, and I wanted a dual boot HD install with winXP. So, heres a general how-to

some things to remember -

  • linux cant read windows folders that have spaces in the names (eg, "Documents and Settings" folder)
  • only one partition is mounted automatically at puppy boot, the /mnt/home partition - so that is the best place for a shared profile

1) go to your existing pupxxx file and find .../.mozilla/account (where account is the name of your account) and make a backup copy of your account on a safe partition, or a CD, then make sure there is also a copy of this on a FAT partition outside the pupxxx file
2) make two FAT32 partitions - one for windows and one for puppy
3) install windows to c:\
4) use the windows XP installer to install puppy on its partition and configure grub
5) install seamonkey on windows and on puppy
6) boot to windows and create a new windows seamonkey profile located on the puppy partition (eg. in windows the path is d:\.mozilla\main\ where the same path in puppy is /mnt/home/.mozilla/main) add email accounts to mail client, but dont download mail - or it will be separated from the existing mail you have
7) boot to puppy and create a new puppy seamonkey profile with exactly the same name, stored in exactly the same folder, add email accounts to mail client, but dont download mail - or it will be separated from the existing mail you have
8) go to the copy of your existing mozilla account and copy abook.mab, bookmarks.html and the mail folder intto your new shared profile, ie - replace the files that are there with the ones from your old profile
9) with any luck now you have windows and puppy using the same profile and storing mail in the same place

Of course - if you already have windows and puppy installed on FAT32 partitions, you would start at 6)
