Message received from Kenneth Jahn Lavrsen, the official maintainer of the "Motion" Video Surveillance project:
"Thanks for notifying me about the puppylinux use of Motion. It is nice to know that ones effort is not wasted.
I may actually take a look at puppy. I am looking for a distro which is very small - on which I can add apache and perl libs and create a VM machine running TWiki. I am looking a small distro for this. Maybe puppy is the one.
Motion is perhaps less sophisticated than zoneminder out-of-the-box (http://www.zoneminder.com)∞, but it has the advantage of being more easily configured for basic video surveillance. It can, however, also provide excellent functionality when combined with other linux tools; see, for example, a more fully configured Motion in action monitoring over a dozen webcams at Kenneth Jahn Lavrsen's home in Denmark: http://www.lavrsen.dk/webcam/∞
Lavrsen, the Motion project's maintainer, describes Motion as "a program that monitors the video signal from one or more cameras [including webcams] and is able to detect if a significant part of the picture has changed. Or in other words, it can detect motion"
(quote from http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Motion/MotionGuideInstallation#Motion_Overview)∞.
On detecting motion, the application can easily be configured to capture jpeg and/or avi images of the event and, for example, upload them to a website or email them to a recipient.
Two versions of Motion are currently available for Puppy Linux (both dotpet packages created by forum member mcewanw). The first is for the earlier version 3.1.19, which is repackaged from a compilation found at the Damn Small Linux repository. The advantage of this version is that it is very small. However, it lacks many of the features of version 3.2.28 which has been specially compiled from the original motion sources for use with Puppy Linux version 2.17.1 (it may also work with other versions). Neither of these compilations, however, currently include mysql operability (though Motion can be easily recompiled to include that). If space is not at a premium you are advised to use Motion 3.2.28.
Either version of Motion can be downloaded as a dotpet (which registers with PetGET and provides an icon in the JWM menu > Multimedia section) from:
