PupWin98.zip with Puppy 1.0.7 is now available here:

Puppy Linux for Win98 works with Windows 98 with no need for floppy disk and no need for cd-rom drive.

This is Puppy Linux version 1.0.7 with Mozilla, re-packaged as a zip archive file with a few pieces added to run from your Windows 98 desktop. You'll need an un-zip program like ALZip or WinZip to handle the zip file.

This time with grub instead of tiny thanks to help from BruceB and WiZard.

This implementation does not modify your Windows installation in any way. Very simply, eight files are placed on your hard disk drive. And, Puppy Linux runs outside Windows, starting from MS-DOS launched by an icon on your Windows desktop. Almost too simple to explain, but here goes:

  • Win98 can exit, run a program in DOS and return to Windows. Right-click the PupWin98 icon on the Windows desktop and select Properties. Select the Program tab and the Advanced button. See MS-DOS mode is marked, which tells Windows to launch a program outside Windows. (Note: WinXP cannot do this.)
