Point 8: other Keyboards
Puppy Linux is a real English only distribution.

You have to add new software to manage other keyboards and change the keyboards if you are writing in different languages.

(See also please Main information about package management∞, DotPup-Howto, DotPup, DotPups and DotPupsContributions). For English speakers, no problem! I only indicate the way for the translation into other languages because the user dialogs in Puppy are all in English!

I suppose that your are connected with the internet.

The needed software is contained in a Dotpup package named Keyboard-layouts.pup downloadable at http://dotpups.de/dotpups/XServer/∞ . This German server is NOT connected with the automatic actualisations routine from installations tool from "install" icon.

    • Click on your icon "browse"
    • Visite the German server, walk and look for the under really fun presentation proposed numerous packages. After that:
    • Download the Keyboard-layouts.pup package using the Mozilla Browser:
    • Click on it!
    • The invite windows opens
    • Select "save to disc"
    • Select "file system" + "save" key
    • Click on your icon "home"
    • Find the new dotpup file and click on it. This makes that the dotpup installer starts itself:
    • click on "unzip the DotPup File"
    • click on "run installer"; a succes information (i hope so) appears and says that you have to restart JWM
    • click on "ok" 2 x
    • click on "delete the DotPup File"
    • click on the "start" key
    • click on "shut down"
    • click on "JWM restart"

You will find a new subdivision "Dotpups" in your menu "start" after clicking on the "start" key and in this subdivision a new icon "choose keyboard layout"! My experience is that not all DotPups produce this new icon properly:

By the same way, you can install the other needed dotpup packages from http://dotpups.de∞ !

The official DotPups site connected through your icon "install" on the desktop give you an other interesting package named xvkbd:

    • click on the "install" icon in the first icon line at the top of the desktop
    • you will 4 buttons in the new menu
    • click on the second, with the text: "Click button to run the DotPup Downloader"
    • the downloader asks if the DotPup list has to be actualized, downloaded again; being online, you answer "yes"
    • the DotPup Downloader opens and you see on the left side divisions
    • find the "Security" division and click on it
    • at the right side appear the packages (in this division only one: "xvkbd Virtual keyboard")
    • click on it becoming it in blue and click on the key "install" at the bottom
    • the DotPup Downloader downloads and asks "unzip the Pup file" / "always" / "Cancel"
    • make your choice and continue...
    • I took the first; the DotPup downloader continues and asks "Run the installer" / "always" / "Cancel"
    • make your choice and continue...
    • I took the first; the DotPup downloader continues and asks "Delete the DotPup file" / "always" / "never" / "Cancel"
    • make your choice and continue...
    • close the open windows but put the icon of your new application from the little windows to your screen before closing!
    • "exit" the DotPup downloader.

    • activate the virtual keyboard and the keyboard appears on the screen.
    • at the bottom left on the keyboard you see a key named "xvkdb": through this key you can choice other keyboard layouts under the option "Change keyboard layout" and access to the (English) handbook.

(in the case that you are not in the internet, you have to prepare the equivalent steps at first, so download etc. on a separate operation system or computer, and do the same analog using a burned CD!).
