tar create/restore archives

Verify the currently installed version by entering the following into the command-line interface:
tar --version

tar-1.25-f-20101121.pet 161KB software package - DISCLAIMER
./configure FORCE_UNSAFE_CONFIGURE=1 CFLAGS="-mtune=generic -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}" --prefix=/ --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --host=i486-pc-linux-gnu --enable-backup-scripts && make && make check

Extracting tar archives (tar by default will extract the file according to its extension):
tar xfv file.EXTENSION

Creating tar archives:
tar cfv archivename.tar [dir...]

To create an archive of a directory with xz compression:
tar cfJv archivename.tar.xz [dir...]

To list (view) the contents of a tar file without extracting:
tar tf archivename.tar.xz
