Introduction

Tar is a compression format, like for example, Zip in Windows.
What is inside the package is anybodies guess, could be a program, pictures, files, etc...

Verify the installed version via the command-line interface:
tar --version

Dependencies: +bzip2,+gettext,+gnutls,+grep

./configure FORCE_UNSAFE_CONFIGURE=1 CFLAGS="-mtune=generic -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}" --prefix=/ --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --host=i486-pc-linux-gnu --enable-backup-scripts

Extracting tar archives (tar by default will extract the file according to its extension):
tar xfv file.EXTENSION

Creating tar archives (without compression):
tar cfv archivename.tar [dir...]

To create an archive of a directory with xz compression:
tar cfJv archivename.txz [dir...]

To list (view) the contents of a .txz or .tar.xz file without extracting:
tar tf archivename.tar.xz
