I wonder if a "donate" button would help towards gathering funds for hosting and bandwidth?
This would provide a "blanket" method for us happy users to support the whole community. I know donations never amount to much but I guess every little bit helps.
I, for one, have no way of contributing to the community other than by monetary means.

we want a greek puppy. (puppel).

we have two problems.

(with el_GR.utf8).

1. in rxvt we dont have greece. with sakura is all ok, so we have it.

but the other problem is important.

In scripts (pmount, etc) there are orange windows, with messages (Puppy Drive Mounter, please wait....).

if we translate it, do not appear Greek, but as symbols. (only the text in orange windows).
_________________

Peer to peer Puppy

Is it viable?[ Taking the Puppy out for a walk » Suggestions ]

I'm thinking of a system where the package manager would automatically download packages via torrent, and then keep the last several packages you've downloaded hanging around to seed them. It would have some kind of size limit, so that it would never be retaining more than 10-20 MB or whatever. When you install something new, it could remove either the oldest package(s), or preferably, the package(s) that you seed least often. (I add the (s) because if you download something large, it may need to discard several packages to hold the larger one).

There would of course be options to disable that, or modify the parameters (size retained, seeding bandwidth, etc.) to take care of people with poor connections or network admins who consider p2p to be an Evil technology only used by those nefarious baby-eating Software Pirates.

We'd need to set up our own tracker on a server somewhere, because I think that existing trackers would probably find it rude for us to randomly decide to use them for our entire package management. From what I understand, trackers don't use much, resource-wise, so it shouldn't be a big problem to set one up. The actual location for the uploaded package could be anywhere, so long as there's a direct link to the file so that people who can't use torrents can get it. We could host the .torrent files on the same server that runs the tracker, or put them anywhere. Those are little.

The trick is getting all of this as automatic as possible, so that people don't have to think about it. It should happen automatically.

Uhh, I have to go to class now, I'll type more later.
_________________
My sandals don't like to be laughed at. --Samurai Jack
I followed up a bit on your SUSE forum lead and found out that the person posting the problem had eventually to add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4" to the modprobe.conf file.
I also found out that when I added the options statements to modprobe.conf on my machine, and then ran the puppy alsa wizard, the wizard erased the options statements. I put the statements back in and was able to reboot to restart alsa and the options statements were still in modprobe.conf. Testing the result, however, did not provide any sound.
Also, as could be expected, the IDT company does not provide any LINUX drivers. Meanwhile, back to further searching.

How to install open office with sfs

[ Advanced Topics » Additional Software (PUPs, n' stuff) ]

Thank you guys, I just solved renaming the file with the "_411" at the end. Another question: first I tried open office 2, then I substituted the sfs file with the Open Office 3 .sfs one. It works perfectly but i wonder if i have to do a sort of "uninstall" of the previous OO2 .sfs or simply delete it.
Many thanks

How to configure a serial port for VMware player? [SOLVED]

[ House Training » Beginners Help ( Start Here) ]

I hope to get some advice about getting my serial port configured to work with Puppy 4.1.1 and VMware player 2.0.5, running a win2k pro virtual machine. VMware shows the serial port is available but trying to communicate to a PLC logic controller from software in win2k fails. I have included some info about the current setup below in the hope that someone can spot the trouble. The serial hardware is a PCI and it does work.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Sound exciting, although I was hoping for something like Pardus Linux. I'll be keepking tabs on Woof through your blog.

BTW aren't you afraid that if you're totally dependent on another distro's packages that Woof will simply be seen as a derivative of that distro? In http://akaimbatman.blogspot.com/2005/06/linux-desktop-distribution_111888594099190449.html this article there's a suggestion how software in Linux should be installed, i.e. just like on Apple, which I found a good idea.

all hardware works except some function keys that is what I am working on.

The wireless switch works, but after you turn it off and then back on you need to run the connection wizard again.

Both sd card readers work if the card is in @ boot.

No wifi lights due to ath5k driver not supporting it.

Still working on a way to get the external monitor function key to work without killing X or Rebooting. Any suggestions would help.

I will probably try to get a lid close to trigger a shutdown as I haven't played with hibernate at all yet.

How I installed Puppy on my Dell Xpi p90

No CDROM , no stiffy, no problem![ House Training » HOWTO ( Solutions ) ]

I suspect it worked for smeebob, and not for you because he attached his old hd to his computer via usb. It appears as thought you attached the old hd as a secondary ide drive.

The Puppy Universal Installer would assume that a usb attached hd should be installed as usbhdd, which will become the primary boot device, when it is used to boot, and install the boot loader accordingly. When this old hd is returned to the original machine, it is in fact the primary boot device and so it works.

However with a hd attached as a secondary ide device, the Puppy Universal Installer would assume that your primary hd will remain your primary boot device, and will install the boot loader accordingly. When this hd is returned to it's original machine, it fails to boot. This is because it is now a primary boot device, but it was never setup to be one.

Puppy Linux for Developers and Coders[ Goto page: 1, 2, 3 ][ Advanced Topics » Puppy Derivatives ]

Anyone want to change the IDEs? I like code::blocks and such, but anyone want me to ditch this in favor of KDevelop, which produces more "professional-looking" projects? KDevelop requires KDE libs though, which would take up a lot of space. I could also ditch Code::Blocks and WxGTK in favor of the C++ extension in Netbeans, but i don't really like how netbeans auto-closes {} "" and (). Maybe there's a config file somewhere that i can turn this off, i think there is somewhere... Anyway, what's your thoughts; Does Code::Blocks survive the cut? Is it worth it if it only supports C++ (all others support C++, Java, Ruby, PHP, etc.).

Code::Blocks Pros:
Good interface
Lots of project configs, like SDL project, OpenGL project, WX* project, etc.
Good syntax highlighting, fast building.

Cons:
Very large, i could probably cut ~70 MB without it, or more
Only supports C++

Netbeans Pros:
Very popularly used
Handles many languages ( http://www.netbeans.org/ , look under "Supported Technologies" )

Cons:
Hard to configure some options
I don't like it's syntax-highlighting/auto-complete

KDevelop Pros:
Develops full project files that can be compiled with ./configure, make, make install
Handles many languages ( http://www.kdevelop.org/HEAD/doc/api/html/LangSupportStatus.html )

Cons:
Is very complicated the first time you use it (it gets easier after a while)
Relies on KDE libs

If anyone has anything else to say, or wants to voice an opinion, post.

Thanks!

Puppy under Parallels Desktop?

Installation[ House Training » Beginners Help ( Start Here) ]

Hi,

I'm new to Puppy but not totally new to Linux. I got involved with Puppy when I tried to install it on an ancient Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop (366 mhz Pentium II, maxed out at 256 MB RAM!) for my father-in-law. It worked great as a live CD (including even WPA wifi access using NDISWRAPPER!) but for the life of me I couldn't get GRUB configured properly to get Puppy to boot directly from the hard disk (I tried both the full install and frugal install methods, but couldn't figure out how to configure GRUB). This was disappointing because Puppy ran like lightning on that old laptop, whereas I ended putting Tiny Me on the machine for him (a lightweight PC Linux OS variant) which, while pretty, runs considerably slower than Puppy.... oh well.

Anyway, I have a MacBook Pro and would like to play around with Puppy under Parallels Desktop virtualization, but was unable to get wifi working. Does anybody have any tips to get Puppy running as a virtual machine under Parallels?

Thanks!
